A chip handles a signal. A compact computer runs a model. A wearable brings the interaction within reach. The experience emerges when the pieces work together.

WHY EMBEDDED AI FEELS DIFFERENT
Intelligence in the moment.
Embedded systems put computing inside a device with a specific job. A button, microphone, small screen or sensor becomes part of how intelligence meets the physical world.
A microcontroller and a Linux computer serve different roles. One can coordinate inputs and peripherals; the other can host a richer application stack. AI accelerators add another option when the model and software support them.
THE HARDWARE LANDSCAPE
Choose the role. Then the chip.
These platforms illustrate the technology landscape. They are educational references, rather than a confirmed OnCore parts list.
01 / MICROCONTROLLERS
ESP32-S3: close to the input.
Espressif’s ESP32-S3 combines a dual-core microcontroller with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE and peripheral interfaces. Its development-board family includes general-purpose, display and audio-focused options.
Microcontroller memory and processing constraints differ substantially from a Linux system. Bluetooth LE is distinct from Classic Bluetooth audio.
Boards such as the Orange Pi Zero 3W show how much computing can fit into a compact platform. Orange Pi’s own introduction identifies its Allwinner A733 processor and LPDDR5 memory options.
Board selection also depends on operating-system support, drivers, storage, thermals and the workload—not just a specification sheet.
Jetson development kits and Hailo accelerators illustrate dedicated edge AI hardware. Hailo-8 is designed for neural-network inference in edge devices.
Accelerator support is specific to models and toolchains. This broader hardware category does not imply an accelerator is part of OnCore’s initial product.
A wearable interface can make a short interaction easier to reach. A microphone captures input; a display gives concise feedback; a deliberate control tells the system when you want its attention.
01
Clear controls
An intentional input should have visible or tactile acknowledgement.
02
Glanceable responses
Small screens work best with clear state and concise replies. Longer work belongs on a larger surface.
03
Know when capture is active
Recording status and user control are part of the experience from the beginning.
ONCORE / IN DEVELOPMENT
OnCore explores a personal AI utility system with local information, nearby interfaces and deliberate boundaries for external actions. Form factors and capabilities are still being developed.
FROM DEV KIT TO PERSONAL SYSTEM
The board is the beginning.
Power
A responsive device needs a sensible balance between sleeping, listening and doing heavier work.
Storage
Local files, derived indexes and removable media need clear ownership, reliable transfer and deletion behavior.
Software fit
CPU support, accelerator drivers and model runtimes need validation on the exact system.
The complete experience
Enclosure, heat, connection quality and recovery from failures all affect whether hardware feels useful.
